December, 2015: To encourage Argonne to increase its impact on the global development of additive manufacturing — also known as “3D printing” — Global Security Sciences (GSS) and Technology Development and Commercialization (TDC) recently hosted a laboratory-wide strategy workshop titled “Additive Manufacturing: What Industry-Sponsored Research Opportunities Should Argonne Pursue?”
Communications, Education and Public Affairs also participated by promoting the Dec. 10 event and assisting with planning and documentation. The workshop was part of GSS’s additive manufacturing initiative and also a TDC industry outreach activity.
The goal for the workshop was to bring together a diverse cross-section of the lab in pursuit of new opportunities by identifying both existing and potential Argonne capabilities in additive manufacturing and three-dimensional printing. The workshop featured more than a dozen presentations on Argonne activities in these areas, and it received an overwhelming response with 89 participants from all across the laboratory.
TDC, GSS, and CEPA are continuing this partnership by conducting a survey to gauge interest and capabilities among Argonne researchers who want to participate in this initiative. This survey is hosted on SurveyMonkey, the laboratory’s third-party survey provider. The survey has been tested and is safe to use.
The partners also plan to host a workshop in the first quarter of 2016 in which Argonne researchers can receive meaningful feedback on their research from selected representatives from the additive manufacturing industry.
